Whether fighting Confederates during the Civil War or constructing the Union Pacific Railroad in the West, Grenville M. Dodge’s remarkable life made him a national hero and, in the words of one contemporary, the very symbol of “the American ideal of courage, vision, action and candor.” We will ride along with “The General” as he fought to save the Union and destroy slavery and later as he built the transcontinental railroad to ensure the nation’s future prosperity. We will also explore Dodge’s other enduring passions: his family and friends, his business interests, his fellow veterans, his pets and his hometown of Council Bluffs, Iowa. The second session of this course will be a field trip to Council Bluffs, where we will tour the Historic General Dodge House, a three-story mansion that stands on a high terrace overlooking the Missouri Valley, and displays such architectural features as parquet floors, cherry, walnut and butternut woodwork and a number of “modern” conveniences, including central heating and hot and cold running water. The tour will provide a wonderful opportunity to interact with the dedicated staff at the Dodge House to learn more about the General. The day trip will include lunch at Tish’s Restaurant. ADA Accommodation: The visit to General Dodge House will include walking, climbing stairs and getting on and off a bus. The house is handicapped accessible only on the main floor. Individuals requiring accommodation should share this information when registering for this course. Instructor: William B.
